Happy 2nd Birthday

CycleKarting.com turns 2 years old today. To celebrate, I finally put some sweat and time into my build. In a messy garage and with a little help from my 4 year, I built my box. The front and sides are attached and actually feel very sturdy. When I set out to build a Cycle Kart, I imagined racing around by now, but despite the set backs it still felt really good to work on it.

Box Progress

As far as the site goes, we’ve had 50,000 page views in the last two years, so it is nice to see some people interested in Cycle Karting. There has even been a lot of traffic from several motor cycle sites, including caferacer.net, so I’d encourage anyone working on a cafe racer to build a Cycle Kart next, as this years winter project.

Cycle Kart Plywood Body

Despite the excuses, I finally found the time to start working on the plywood body for my cycle kart.  I found myself continually sitting next to the sheet of plywood as I drew and redrew my lines to make sure I fit and still maintained the proportions.  I know various cycle karting enthusiasts have used a range of materials, but I chose 3/4 inch plywood for added strength, and will actually cut large sections out for decreased weight.  I plan to use several cross sections as reinforcement.  I’m still cutting and hope to post pictures soon (when I finish cutting).

Cycle Kart Inspiration – Part 2

I have been too busy lately to get much done on my build, but I thought I would still  post some more inspiration.
Tom Fritz Car Art

First, I present Tom Fritz (http://www.fritzart.com) who creates some fantastic automobile inspired artwork.  If you browse his gallery, be sure to visit the “Hot Rods” section for some neat Cycle Kart inspiration.  There aren’t any Cycle Karts in his gallery of course, but it is still worth the visit.

Second, be sure to touch up on your Mercedes-Benz racing history by visiting Jalopnik.com’s article (http://jalopnik.com/5406561//gallery/gallery/1).

Cycle Kart Engine

Cycle Kart Engine

I finally got my engine so I am one step closer.  I did decide to vary from the “official” Cycle Karting Specs, by deciding to use an 8HP Tecumseh Power Sport engine.  This is the wrong engine, but I decided since I don’t have a bunch of other Cycle Karts to race, I would cheat.  I intend to throttle back or swap in a 6HP if I ever get to ride with a proper Cycle Kart.

I did purchase steel as well and have started working on the front end and suspension of the cycle kart.
